KIPP Ujima Village Academy is open to rising fifth and sixth graders who have addresses zoned to eight feeder elementary schools in Northwest Baltimore : Arlington , Callaway, Cross Country, Dr. King, Edgecombe Circle , Fallstaff, Langston Hughes, and Pimlico Elementary.  In the early part of each calendar year, KIPP Ujima staff mail information about the school to the families of all fourth and fifth graders zoned to these schools.  For current fourth graders, the mailing includes a self-addressed, stamped postcard that parents can sign and send back to the school to enroll their children in the school’s enrollment lottery.  In addition, KIPP Ujima staff members visit many of these families to solicit postcard submissions in person so as to make sure that parents who may not have received or responded to the mailing, for whatever reason, can still learn about the school and have the opportunity to enroll their children in the lottery.

In the spring, KIPP Ujima holds a public lottery to randomly select its next class of students.  KIPP UJIMA STAFF DO NOT SEE ANY ACADEMIC OR BEHAVIORAL INFORMATION ABOUT STUDENTS BEFORE THE LOTTERY.

If parents of rising sixth graders want to enroll their children in KIPP Ujima, they may bring their children to the school to take diagnostic tests in math and reading.  The tests determine whether the students have learned the standards necessary to succeed in the sixth grade at KIPP Ujima.  If a student passes both tests, the parent can automatically enroll the student in the school.  If the student does not pass one of the tests, the parent may enter the student’s name in the school’s fifth-grade lottery if the parent wants to have the student repeat the fifth grade at KIPP Ujima.  Each year, approximately 10-15 parents of students who have completed the fifth grade at other schools choose for their children to repeat the fifth grade at KIPP Ujima, and many of these students have progressed at KIPP Ujima and been extremely successful.
