About Us

KIPP Ujima Village Academy is the highest-performing school serving middle grades in Baltimore City and one of the highest-performing schools in Maryland. KIPP Ujima servers the Park Heights neighborhood and nearby communities in Northwest Baltimore.

KIPP stands for Knowledge Is Power Program. KIPP Schools are based on five pillars:

  • High Expectations - all students are expected to achieve and ultimately matriculate to college.

  • More Time on Task - all students attend school daily for at least 9.25 hours during the regular school year, for at least 6.5 hours for three weeks in the summer, and for 3.5 hours on Saturdays  throughout the year.

  • Choice and Commitment - all students, parents, and staff choose the school and make a commitment to meet its high expectations.

  • Power to Lead - the school has the power to staff, budget, and teach according  to the students' needs.

  • Focus on Results - KIPP Baltimore measures success based on actual student achievement, and ultimately based on how many students graduate from college.

"Ujima" means "collective work and responsibility." Ujima is the third principle of Kwanza and represents the theme of our school. We use the seven principles of Kwanza as the framework for our school's value.

Vision

All students from Northwest Baltimore will succeed in high school and college, will determine their own professions and quality of life, and will work hard to make Northwest Baltimore, the United States, and the world a better place for all people.

Mission

Our mission is to develop in every student the academic skills, intellectual habits, and qualities of character necessary to succeed in rigorous high schools and colleges, self-determined professionals and societal improvement.

Climbing the Mountain to College: When a student enters a KIPP School in the fifth grade, the student, parents, and teachers make a promise to successfully "climb the mountain to college." To achieve this goal, KIPP schools continue to support students who complete the eighth grade at KIPP on their journey from KIPP to College.:
